Hello everyone!
This week, our group is going to present a short film named Partly Cloudy to the class. The video is 5:02 minutes long, and was included in the Animation Show of Shows in 2009.
You may get puzzeled the first time you watch it, try to watch it again, and think about the underlying meaning of the story.
I would not say anymore before you watched in order not to affect your judgement. Different people may see from different standpoints, and there is no only correct answer.

From an entertainment standpoint, I really enjoyed the clip. I was first expecting the dark cloud to be evil or something. What I found interesting in this clip was that there was no evil in it the film really. The dark cloud was kind of unfortunate to have to make the less cuddly animals but that doesn’t make them evil. The cloud and the bird both appeared to be somehow in worse shape than the rest of the species. For example the cloud was dark and the bird looked underfed or something. I was expecting some flaw but really they both showed good values. The cloud showed hard work and the bird showed friendship which is one of the biggest things I got out of the film. The other message I got was that no matter what the circumstances are you can always create a positive if only you think about the situation the right way
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this short film. The message that I took from this video is that others shouldn’t judge and give up on people who look different or do things in life a little different from others. For example, in the film the one cloud was dark and gray unlike the other clouds that were pastel colored and happy looking. Also, the dark cloud had the job of creating creatures who either were dangerous or wasn’t as friendly as others. The cloud took his job seriously and didn’t mind making these creatures even though they were hazardous. All the clouds had a bird that carried the babies and other creatures to their new home on Earth and the dark cloud’s bird seemed tired and wore out after each return. The bird didn’t seem to mind being beaten up, poked, and punched by the creatures that the cloud created. This makes me think that the bird is very trustworthy and non-judgmental to the fact that the dark cloud was different than the others. The bird went out and got armor to wear to protect him so that he could continue his job for the dark cloud and this indicates that there are people out in the world who would do anything to help others who seem different than others.
ReplyDeleteThis isn’t the first time I’ve seen the short film but I really enjoyed it. I think without looking too far into the meaning of the film you can enjoy the visual images of the story. Pixar always seems to make some extremely captivating visuals with their characters and I especially liked when the cloud started to cry and it started raining at the same time. If I had to try and find a hidden meaning I would say the film is making a statement about our society and people who may not fit in. At the beginning of the film you see the dark cloud is by itself in the sky. He looks almost longingly at the other clouds as if he wants to fit in. He also means well with the animals he makes but they just end badly. I think this could represent that in our society we sometimes overlook people who are different or have ideas that are drastically different than ours instead of appreciating them for the unique person that they are.
ReplyDeleteAt first I was a little skeptical of the short film, but overall I'd say I truly enjoyed it. Pixar has always incorporated quirkiness into their films and that's what I like about them. The part that made me realize what I believe is to be the true meaning behind the film, was when the cloud got very sad and it started raining underneath him; He was upset because the bird didn't want to bring down any of the animals he gave to him/her. This film in my opinion is demonstrating the existence of judgement towards others in our society, and that many people draw such quick conclusions about ideas/people and are close-minded. This film also shows me that people should accept others for who they are, not for what they appear to be from the outside, and that we should respects others for however they want to live their lives and for the person they want to be.

At first I sympathized with the dark cloud because it seemed disappointed that it did not have the creative ability of the other clouds and created animals that were different from the others. I admired the bird's perseverance to deliver whatever animal it was given even when it was looking at the other animals the other birds had to deliver. I thought the clip showed elements of a true friendship by showing that the bird stuck by the dark cloud no matter what it was given and kept returning back,
ReplyDeleteOne idea that I wanted to vision “Partly Cloudy” was this friendship approach. “Partly Cloudy” illustrates two friends: a dark cloud and a stork. The dark cloud, unlike other clouds, tends to create items that aren’t as pleasurable or enjoyable as the other items created by clouds. I saw this difference between the clouds condor up two different possibilities: the dark cloud represents either the individual that does the “dirty work” in society, or the individual that walks an unusual road compare to society. Either way, the dark cloud has his own buddy, Mr. Stork (not his name but continuing), that hangs around him. The problem occurs when the dark cloud brings the stork into his life, delivering usually vicious creatures to their mothers. Like before, this could be indicating the “dirty work” that the dark cloud has to do or something like doing drugs. Either scenario, the stork doesn’t enjoy how the dark cloud rolls, often thinking about the other storks how they have easier lives. Whether you take the “dirty work” approach or the “different paths in life” approach, the idea is the same: true friends will stick together, even through the various hardships, and support each other alone the way. The ending displays the message to me that, “even if your friends drive you crazy at times, they need you as much as you need them.”
ReplyDeleteThe short film definitely kept my attention the whole time, I thought it was very cute and entertaining. There were many details I noticed throughout the short film, such as the dark color of the outcast cloud compared to the rest of the clouds. Also, that cloud was positioned lower in the sky than the rest of the cloud. The bird who flew down the dark cloud's animals was also darker than the rest of the birds. This initially led me to believe that this was the "evil" cloud, creating dangerous animals while the rest made cuddle puppies, cats and babies. However, later in the film, I felt as though the cloud was not a bad cloud, but rather the cloud stuck with the duty of making the dangerous animals. Someone had to be the one with this job, and this cloud made the best out of it. Although the animals were dangerous, they were still cute and made by a cloud. Near the end when the bird appeared to leave the dark cloud for the lighter clouds, the dark cloud was very upset. This also showed that the cloud was not evil, and he/she still had feelings and cared for his bird just like the rest of the clouds. I loved how the sports equipment previously made by the light clouds was given to the bird to make the best out of his difficult duty of delivering the dangerous animals. Overall I thought it sent a good message, to never judge something/someone based off of initial appearance, and was very enjoyable to watch
ReplyDeleteThe first time I saw this short film was on "Chinese Facebook". The Story reminded me of some memories and sences. When you truly fall in love with a person, you cannot forget him/her because of his/her shortcomings and harms done to you. That explains why there are so many boys and girls feeling extremely hopeless after they break up with their boyfriends or girlfriends. They may say that they will forget the terrible memory, and their past boy/girlfriends are not reliable. However, they will put in a good word for the relationship. Sometimes, although he/she has some shortcomings, you will still and even more love him/her under this condition. That is the strength of love or friendship.
ReplyDeleteI've seen this short film before i think it was really cute how they clouds make different presents for different houses. It was interesting to see how there was only one different cloud that was producing presents that were dangerous and scary like the crocodile, shark and etc. The Pelican or bird that was the messenger for the different cloud was always with the cloud even though the cloud was producing "not peaceful or cute animals/babies". This is sending a message that it is hard for people to leave other people just because they are different. When the bird leaves the cloud i thought the bird would never come back but it came back with helmets and padding which symbolized the love and strong friendship between the cloud and the bird. I think that this short film explains a really good message about the bonds between people and how things can't pull apart people.
ReplyDeleteMany people viewed the relationship between black cloud and bird as “true friendship”. However, I thought the film may more likely indicate a relationship between parents and their children. Although the black cloud could not do the job as good as other white clouds, the bird never leave him and never complain anything. I thought no matter friends or lovers, the relationship can last only if people can learn from each other and feel real happy when they get together. It should be reciprocal not one person feels happy while the other suffers. But from the film it seems that the bird is always getting injured and hurt while the black cloud seldom cares about the bird and creates many strange and dangerous things. So I thought only parents can do so. Their love is great and unselfish. No matter how many times we argue with them, hurt them, they never give up loving and care about us all the same.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first watched this short film I was so confused on what it was about. I knew by first watching it it showed the friendship between the bird and the cloud, but it wasn't until I saw it a second time I realized how strong that friendship was. The main cloud in the film is separated and below all the other clouds. It is also a different color. His only friend is a stork who deliverers his creations which are always hurting the stork. Even though this happens the stork never leaves the cloud except to bring back protective gear to protect itself from the dangerous animals the cloud creates. I just love how strong that friendship is.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Chunan's comments. When i first watch this short film, i am touched by how strong the friendship is between the dark cloud and the stork. However, when i really think about it, in reality, no one can give unconditional love except parents. Friendship is most often bulit on common interests and mutual respect. It cannot last long if one person is always doing something to hurt the other one, for example, the dark cloud creats dangerous animals that would hurt the stork, even though he doesn't mean to. While parents' love is a lot more forgiving
ReplyDeleteIt is one of the best animations i have ever seen. The clouds are like gods, they create different things for people, and the cranes are like angels who deliver them. The dark cloud always create some dangerous and aggressive animals, it seems to imply the unlucky experiences we have in our lives. However, the weak crane didn't give up although it is hurt every time. The video may tell that people should be optimistic for bad things, maybe we can't change too much but we could choose another way to treat them, just like what the crane did, it got football apparel to protect itself. Another aspect the video can tell is about the friendship. It is very common for friends getting together if they both can experience happy things, but it is rare that a friend is always supporting you and follow you even you are in some trouble or difficult position. It reminds people if they have this kind of friends around them, they should hold them and say "Thank you".
ReplyDeleteI think this short film's underlying meaning is different things are meant for different people. One cloud produces darker more dangerous animals and the other cloud makes fluffier and nicer ones. The bird still delivers them, and I agree with many of the other comments when I say that represents not judging a book by its cover. The crane's love is so deep that he makes adjustments just to stick it out with the dark cloud. That brought happiness and warmth to my soul.
ReplyDeleteThis is a touching short anime film about friendship. When the dark cloud insisting being who he is, the bird is always beside him. And after the bird fly away from the dark cloud, I was worried that it will never come back. But at last, it came back to the dark cloud, telling us that a true friend will never turn his back on you. As far as I am concerned, a friendship can exit anywhere no matter who the person is. The dark cloud surely is not the most kind or popular one, however the bird chooses to be friend with him. So we should not judge our friends and that is the most valuable feature of friendship.
ReplyDeleteI thought that this short film had many lessons embedded in it, while being enteraining at the same time. I personally believe in opposites, and that everything has an opposite. This cloud represents the opposite of the other clouds in the film. He embraces his differences and encourages his partner to as well. First impressions may lead one to believe that he is evil, bad, or creates bad things on purpose. But as the film progresses, the filmmakers show us that he has feelings just like everyone else, and that he's really not all that different. They're trying to say that it's the same way in real life. Just because someone's different from you, you don't look down on them. That's why I thought the pink cloud helped out the dark cloud's partner by giving him a helmet and chest pad. The partner's willingness to stick through everything shows how much of a true friend he is, and that everyone should have someone in the world.
ReplyDeleteThe video clip is very entertaining. It is a story about a grey cloud who create not very cute creatures and his partner , a delivery bird. The delivery bird is always got mess up by the animals created by the grey cloud and all the other clouds are making cute creatures. The grey cloud did not really think good about himself for what he created always brings harm to the delivery bird. Finally one day , the grey cloud saw the bird went to another cloud ask for help. He think his partner is going to leave him and get very mad and then sad. Luckly , the delivery bird was not abandoning the grey cloud , he was asking the other cloud for a football armour so that he can help the grey cloud better. I think the video was trying to announce that how friendships are important and stronger than most the people think. The tittle Partly Cloudly is basically mean that even life is hard , friends would not leave you , true happiness lasts.
